Kebbi State Police Command has said the viral story of villagers blocking a road over insecurity occurred last week and not on Jega-Kontagora Road.
The command’s spokesperson SP Bashir Usman, told LEADERSHIP yesterday that “This issue of villagers block Jega-Kontagora Road over insecurity is an old story. It happened in Jega town last week and I issued a statement to journalists
in Birnin Kebbi the same week and most of you published the story in your papers.
“And let me make it clear that the protest happened in Jega when the protesters blocked Jega-Koko Road, and not Jega- Kontagora Road,” Usman added.
He said some people were arrested during the protest, who are in detention pending the completion of the police investigation.
Usman advised journalists to always verify anything they hear or read on social media or video clips with the police before going to the press.
He noted that the story that made headlines on Monday concerning the old Jega incident was put in circulation by some people on social media and was possibly picked up by some dailies who published without confirmation by the Kebbi Police Command.
