Democrats have seized control of the US Senate, flipping Republican-held seats in Texas, South Carolina, Iowa, Ohio and Kansas.
Counting will continued throughout Tuesday evening, while results in some races may not be known until Wednesday or later.
All 435 House seats and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats are up for grabs. Voters in 36 states will also elect governors.
United States President Donald Trump has said he is “absolutely willing” to accept the outcome of the country’s midterm elections, adding that he is prepared to work with Democrats as results showed the opposition party on course to take control of both chambers of Congress.
Trump made the remarks on Tuesday night during a phone interview with The New York Times, as he watched election results at the White House.
“We’ll, you know, look forward to working with them,” he said. “We’ll probably work something out.”
He attributed the Republican Party’s losses to his absence from the ballot, saying his presence in the election could have made a difference.
Trump also defended his decision to launch a war against Iran, describing it as a “very wise decision”.
The US President said he had no regrets about endorsing Republican candidates, including Senator Darline Graham of South Carolina and Texas Attorney-General Ken Paxton, who both lost their Senate bids.
Speaking shortly before 10:30pm on Tuesday, Trump said he was following the results as the interview was taking place.
“I’m just looking at these results as I’m talking,” he said.
“I see that Darline lost. Wow, that’s amazing. How do you think Lindsey would have done if he ran?” he added, referring to Senator Lindsey Graham, who died in July.
As earlier predicted Democrats are billed to take control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate , a development that will put US President Trump under intense pressure.
