Manchester United manager Michael Carrick came under renewed pressure after his side slumped to a dismal 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth, extending their winless run to eight games.
The Cherries delivered an impressive performance at Old Trafford, exposing United’s defensive weaknesses and lack of attacking inspiration to claim a deserved victory that lifted them to 13th in the Premier League table.
The defeat left United languishing in 16th place with seven points after eight league matches, deepening concerns over their form under Carrick.
The pre-match focus was on United captain Bruno Fernandes, who was dropped to the substitutes’ bench after reportedly criticising Carrick’s tactics following Wednesday’s 4-1 defeat by Como.
Carrick, however, insisted that leaving the Portuguese midfielder out of the starting line-up was a “football decision”.
Fernandes remained on the bench throughout the match, even as United struggled to find a response after falling two goals behind before half-time.
United began the contest poorly, offering little attacking threat while Bournemouth looked dangerous whenever they moved forward. Evanilson and Rayan both squandered early opportunities for the visitors, but the warning signs were clear for the home side.
Bournemouth eventually took the lead through a well-worked set-piece. Justin Kluivert delivered an excellent free-kick that found Rayan unmarked at the far post, and the forward finished with a well-taken volley beyond United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
The visitors continued to exploit United’s defensive uncertainty and doubled their advantage two minutes before the interval.
Leny Yoro slipped at a crucial moment, allowing Adrien Truffert to advance and square the ball for Marcus Tavernier, who calmly converted into an empty net.
The goal left United facing an uphill task, with boos greeting the half-time whistle as frustrated supporters voiced their displeasure. Some fans nevertheless attempted to encourage the players as they made their way towards the dressing room.
Despite United’s need for inspiration, Carrick did not introduce Fernandes, leaving the captain to watch from the sidelines as his team struggled to recover.
Bournemouth resumed the second half with the same attacking intent and thought they had extended their lead when Evanilson found the net, only for the offside flag to rule out the goal.
Rayan subsequently forced Lammens into a save after another defensive error from Ayden Heaven, while the same United defender continued to look uncomfortable under pressure.
The visitors missed another opportunity to put the contest beyond doubt when a mistake by Lisandro Martinez allowed Rayan a clear route towards goal, but the forward failed to capitalise.
Bournemouth eventually secured their third goal after another chaotic moment in the United defence.
Evanilson raced on to a long clearance and nudged the ball past Lammens, who had rushed out of his penalty area in an attempt to intervene. With the goalkeeper stranded, the Brazilian forward calmly curled the ball into the unguarded net to complete a miserable afternoon for the hosts.
The goal underlined Bournemouth’s superiority and United’s defensive frailties, with the visitors taking full advantage of repeated individual errors.
For Bournemouth, the victory marked a remarkable turnaround in their campaign. Having secured their first league win of the season only last weekend, the Cherries have now recorded four consecutive victories in all competitions, building momentum under their current run of form.
United, by contrast, face mounting questions over their performances, tactical approach and ability to respond to setbacks. Their latest defeat was particularly damaging given that it came at home against a Bournemouth side that began the campaign struggling for league victories.
The decision to leave Fernandes on the bench also added another layer to the scrutiny surrounding Carrick, especially after the captain’s reported criticism of the manager’s tactics following the heavy loss to Como.
Although Carrick maintained that his selection was based on footballing considerations, United’s inability to create meaningful chances or mount a comeback will intensify debate over the team’s direction.
With United now 16th after eight Premier League matches and their winless run standing at eight games, Carrick faces growing pressure to find solutions quickly.
Bournemouth, meanwhile, leave Old Trafford with three points, renewed confidence and a performance that exposed the scale of the task facing United as they attempt to arrest their alarming slide.
