Reactions have trailed Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane’s emergence as the winner of the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or, with football fans on X divided over whether the England captain deserved the prestigious individual award ahead of other contenders, including Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal.

Kane was crowned at the 70th edition of the ceremony at the London Palladium on Monday, becoming the first Englishman to win the award since Michael Owen in 2001.

The 33-year-old enjoyed an outstanding 2025–26 campaign, scoring 61 goals in 51 appearances for Bayern Munich and helping the German club secure the domestic league and cup double.

His overall tally, including international matches, reached 73 goals, while he also scored six goals at the World Cup, where England reached the semi-finals.

Kane had earlier won the men’s Striker of the Year award at the ceremony.

While some fans described the victory as thoroughly deserved, others questioned the decision, citing Kane’s record in major competitions and arguing that Yamal had a stronger claim to the award.

Reacting to the outcome, @pherelab wrote,  “The most deserved winner ever in ballon dor history”

However, @D_sikasterling questioned the consistency of the award’s criteria, drawing comparisons with Manchester City striker Erling Haaland’s 2023 campaign.

The user wrote, “If scoring goals could win the Balon Dor, then Haaland was supposed to be the 2023 Balon Dor winner. Besides, Haaland won the UCL, FA CUP, and then Premier League.  If winning the World Cup is enough, then why not someone who won the World Cup? Now you see the inconsistencies?”

Responding to the criticism, @itzkris12 defended Kane’s all-round contribution to Bayern Munich, insisting that his influence extended beyond scoring goals.

He user wrote, “I’m afraid you’re wrong, Kane wasn’t just scoring goals, he was a complete player, a no 9, a no 10, a no 11, a no 7, a no 8, a no 6……..you don’t make 8 touches in a game then score 2, 3 goals and u d best player in the world. Kane did more than just that, a well deserved win.”

For @thintalltunde, Kane’s achievement represented the reward for years of perseverance and consistency.

“Kane’s career is a story of patience and consistency. I’m so happy for him,” the user wrote.

Similarly, @emodzaka described the result as one of the least controversial Ballon d’Or decisions.

The user wrote,  “Well deserved Harry Kane. This is one of the few Ballon d’or that will go down in history of no controversy or whatsoever.”

However, not everyone agreed with the decision, with some fans arguing that Yamal was more deserving of the honour.

@700clarseek wrote,  “Ronaldo was not wrong
Ballon d’or has truly lost its credibility.

Yamal is the rightful ballon d’or winner.

 Champions League semi finalist

  • Winning Bundesliga which Bayern always won
  • No UCL Trophy
  • Bellingham was better than him in World Cup”

Another user, @burgary01, questioned Kane’s achievements in comparison with Yamal’s and raised allegations of racial bias in the voting.

The user wrote,  “Kane only performed in an average league la liga. Never won the champions league nor World Cup but Yamal won the best young player award,  yamal won la liga, yamal won the World Cup so how come kane can be better than this yamal?
That is pure racism and segregation against top black players like Mbappe,  yamal, Dembele…
No wander this trophy used to be only for 2 players [Messi and Christiano) @ballondor”

Similarly, @virgilVanWirtz criticised Kane’s performances in major competitions, writing: “Flopped in the World Cup flopped in the champions league but yes stat padded against bottom tier fodder lets give it to him for scoring goals in a farmers league”

@Geehsports also questioned whether Kane had delivered decisive performances against top opposition in major tournaments.

The user wrote, “For all his talent and ability, show me a KEY match against TOP opposition in any MAJOR tournament, where Hurrikane caused havoc.

The guy scores goals for fun for England against San Marino, Vatican City and Azerbaijan.

Goes AWOL when it matters most.

No BMT.”

Despite the criticism, several users praised Kane’s character, professionalism and long journey to the top of the game.

@NnamdiEmehel wrote: “Does anybody actually hate Harry Kane?
He is that Ngolo Kante type of player no one hates.
 Congrats man.
 A very decent complete striker.
He who continues to work hard while he waits will reap good fruit.”

@drsahi also congratulated the striker, highlighting the importance of patience and perseverance.

The user wrote,  “Good things come to those who wait”….Well done Harry! This is a classic case of patience, perseverance and consistency…I hope future generations of football players look to him as a role model! Enjoy your moment…you deserve it!”

Another user, @The3rdFrame, said Kane’s statistics, consistency and attitude to football made him a deserving winner, despite not supporting either England or Bayern Munich.

He wrote,  “Well done Harry Kane.

I am not English, nor do I support the England team.
I also don’t support Spurs or Bayern Munich, but I doubt there are many football fans who can say this award isn’t merited.

Harry’s stats, consistency and his attitude to the game are top class.”

@muturi3muturi celebrated the striker’s achievement, describing it as the culmination of years of hard work and disappointment.

The user wrote, “IT’S FINALLY HIS!.HARRY KANE IS THE 2026 BALLON D’OR! Years of goals, heartbreak, and CLASS – and now he’s on top of the WORLD! What a moment! No one deserves it more! “

Meanwhile, @futballindstr praised Kane’s achievement while expressing optimism about Yamal’s chances of winning the award in the future.

The user wrote: “Everything seems so beautiful and real to Harry Kane. He truly deserves to win it.

Lamine Yamal might be able to do it in the coming years.”

For @PJ_butcherio, Kane’s professional conduct and personal life further strengthened his case for the award.

The user wrote: “Never a second of controversy. No ego, zero fall outs. Never run his mouth off. Loyal to his childhood sweetheart. Never been in the headlines for anything other than his footballing prowess. The consummate professional. Some greats have won this award, but never a greater man”

@outrider_nation also backed the decision, pointing to the apparent contrast between Kane’s reaction and those of other contenders.

The user wrote,  “Yamal and Dembele reaction was like they expected they would be the winners.
Harry Kane looked like he didn’t even expect it.
I’m glad the right player won, and deservedly”

Adding to the congratulatory messages, @mrBALRMAIN said even Barcelona supporters were pleased with Kane’s success, while encouraging Yamal to continue pursuing the award.

The user wrote,  “Even Barcelona fans we are happy for Harry Kane, he is been good his whole career and retiring with a Ballon dor is such a great honor. For Lamine, the dream is on, next one is yours.”

Social media commentator @danielregha also described Kane’s rise as a lesson in perseverance, pointing to the trophies and individual honours he has accumulated after years without a major title.

The user wrote, “Harry Kane went from not having a single title to his name, to winning about four major ones in less than two years, and getting two prestigious awards at one night, that is, the Gerd Müller Trophy and the Ballon d’Or award.
There’s no better success story, and a lesson on perseverance.
Big congrats to the impactful living legend.”

The Ballon d’Or is awarded annually to recognise  outstanding individual footballer of the year, with an international panel of specialised sports journalists voting on the nominees.

Kane’s victory has therefore generated contrasting reactions, with supporters celebrating his goalscoring record, consistency and professionalism, while critics continue to debate the weight given to individual statistics, team achievements and performances in major competitions.
