Losing internet access halfway through a journey can leave a driver struggling for directions. Google Maps’ offline feature offers a practical backup: download the area before leaving and use it when mobile coverage drops.
Available on Android and iPhone, the feature stores a map on your phone. Driving directions can then work without an internet connection, provided the entire route falls within the downloaded area.
For Nigerian motorists, delivery riders and people travelling unfamiliar routes, this could reduce dependence on mobile data for navigation.
To get started, open Google Maps while connected, tap your profile picture, select “Offline maps,” then “Select your own map.” Choose the area covering your journey and download it.
There are limits: offline maps cannot provide live traffic updates or alternative routes. Walking, cycling and public transport directions are also unavailable offline. Downloaded maps need updating before they expire. Think of it as a useful travel backup, especially where network coverage is unreliable.
