The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a Deputy Superintendent of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Onoja Samuel, for allegedly firing gunshots into the air during an altercation at a market in Kubwa, Abuja.
The police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, following an incident reported to the police on October 25, 2026.
Adeh said the Kubwa Police Division received a distress call at about 1:50 p.m. reporting that an armed man was shooting into the air at the market.
“Upon receipt of the report, police operatives attached to Kubwa Division were promptly deployed to the scene. Following concerted efforts, the suspect was successfully disarmed and arrested,” she said.
The spokesperson identified the suspect as Samuel, a Deputy Superintendent with the NSCDC.
According to her, the suspect went to the market with a pistol after receiving reports that some traders had assaulted his wife. He allegedly fired several shots into the air during a subsequent altercation.
Adeh said the police recovered a CZ pistol and 17 rounds of live 9mm ammunition from him.
“The suspect is currently in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” she added.
Reacting to the incident, the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, urged personnel of sister security agencies to exercise restraint and notify the divisional police headquarters responsible for their areas of operation before undertaking authorised operations.
He said the measure would promote proper coordination among security agencies and prevent avoidable friction.
The command also urged residents to report emergencies through its dedicated hotlines.
