The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested three men for alleged forgery of an Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) identity card and recovery of an unregistered Lexus IS 250 car.
The suspects, identified as Mohammed Umar, Mohammed Nuhu and Ibrahim Suleiman, were intercepted during a routine patrol by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit around the Bukan Sidi area of Lafia, the state capital.
Police said the operatives stopped the Lexus IS 250, which had no registration number, and interrogated its occupants.
According to the Command, Mohammed Nuhu introduced himself as an officer of the ICPC and presented an identity card purportedly issued by the Commission to prove his claim.
However, the driver of the vehicle, Mohammed Umar, could not provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the car’s ownership when questioned by the operatives.
The police said the suspicious circumstances led to the immediate arrest of all three occupants for further investigation.
Preliminary investigation, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, revealed that the ICPC identification card presented by Nuhu was forged.
Nansel said Nuhu later claimed he only accompanied the driver from Kaduna State to Lafia because the driver did not possess a valid driver’s licence.
He added that further profiling of the suspects showed that one of them, Ibrahim Suleiman, is allegedly associated with an unlawful society known as the Eiye Confraternity.
“The allegations are being investigated to establish the full circumstances and determine the extent of involvement of each suspect,” the PPRO stated.
The Command said the suspects remain in custody as the investigation continues, adding that they will be charged in court upon conclusion of the investigation.
It said efforts have been intensified to verify the vehicle’s ownership and to establish other offences that may be connected to the incident.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State Command, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, has reiterated the Command’s commitment to proactive and intelligence-led policing in its fight against crime and criminality across the state.
He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements and activities to the nearest police station.
