Arsenal ended their 14-year wait for a Premier League victory at Anfield after Kai Havertz’s first-half strike secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Liverpool on Sunday, sending Mikel Arteta’s side to the top of the table.
The Gunners claimed their first league victory at Liverpool’s home ground since 2012, with Havertz finding the net in the 16th minute to deliver a significant result in the Premier League title race.
The victory takes Arsenal to 24 points, three clear of second-placed Manchester City, and strengthens their position as early contenders for the title.
Havertz settled the encounter with a well-taken finish after being set up by Declan Rice, whose delivery created the opportunity for the German international to put the visitors ahead.
The goal gave Arsenal the perfect start in a contest between two sides with ambitions of challenging for the Premier League crown.
Liverpool, backed by their home supporters, attempted to respond but struggled to break down Arsenal’s organised defensive structure.
The hosts enjoyed spells of possession and pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Arteta’s men remained disciplined and restricted their opponents’ opportunities.
Florian Wirtz came close to restoring parity when his free-kick struck the crossbar, while Alexis Mac Allister also missed a headed opportunity as Liverpool searched for a way back into the contest.
Arsenal, however, remained dangerous on the counter-attack and showed composure in managing their slender advantage.
The second half saw Liverpool increase the pressure, with the hosts making attacking adjustments in an attempt to salvage a point.
Arsenal responded with changes of their own, introducing Myles Lewis-Skelly in the 72nd minute as they sought to maintain their defensive solidity.
Noni Madueke had earlier been withdrawn in the 56th minute, while Liverpool also made changes as the contest entered its closing stages.
Despite sustained pressure from the home side, Arsenal’s defence held firm, with goalkeeper David Raya helping to preserve the advantage as the visitors protected their lead until the final whistle.
The result represents a major statement from Arteta’s side, particularly given Arsenal’s recent difficulties at Anfield, where Liverpool have traditionally proved difficult opponents.
Beyond ending their long wait for a league victory at the venue, the three points could prove significant in the increasingly competitive title race.
