The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arrested several operators of illegal National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment centres in Gwagwalada, Abuja, and other locations, as part of efforts to curb unauthorised identity registration, data modification and extortion.
The commission also disclosed that its Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit (ICEU) seized illegal enrolment equipment during the enforcement operation.
In a statement, the head of corporate communications, Kayode Adegoke, said the operation was aimed at ending unauthorised enrolment activities and unethical practices capable of undermining the integrity, security and credibility of Nigeria’s National Identity Management System.
The commission warned that Nigerians who patronise unapproved enrolment operators risk problems with their NIN records, noting that many identity-number complaints arise from attempts to bypass official procedures.
It stated that NIN enrolment can only be conducted at NIMC-approved centres, while data modification should be undertaken through its authorised self-service platform.
Similarly, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, reiterated the commission’s zero tolerance for extortion and unethical conduct, adding that it was committed to providing seamless and hitch-free NIN enrolment services for Nigerians and legal residents.
NIMC also advised NIN holders to download the NINAuth application from the Android Play Store or iOS App Store to access security features, protect their identity numbers and print their NIN slips.
The commission urged applicants and existing NIN holders to avoid unauthorised agents and use only approved channels for enrolment and related services.
Nigeria’s National Identification Number is a foundational component of the country’s identity management system, supporting identity verification across public and private services. Its growing use in areas such as telecommunications, banking and government transactions has heightened the need for accurate registration, secure data handling and safeguards against identity fraud.
Meanwhile, NIMC said Nigerians could obtain accurate information on enrolment and related services through its official website, and verified social media platforms. It also provided a toll-free line for enquiries.
