As Nigeria’s 2027 general election gathers steam, President Bola Tinubu faces a series of political battles that could determine his chances of securing a second term.

From opposition unity and regional power struggles to international scrutiny, the road to 2027 is shaping up to be a high-stakes contest. Here are nine political battles to watch.

Here are seven political battles likely to shape the road to the 2027 presidential election.

1. The Battle Over The Economy, Insecurity And Everyday Living Conditions

The main question is: Which side can convince voters that it will improve their lives?

Beyond political alliances and campaign rallies, voters will judge the parties by the conditions they experience at home and at work. Food prices, transport costs, purchasing power, jobs, electricity, insecurity and access to public services are likely to influence voting decisions.

Tinubu’s camp will need to explain the benefits of its policies and demonstrate progress that voters can feel. Opposition parties will need to offer specific, financially credible alternatives rather than relying solely on criticism of the government.

Economic hardship is a factor reshaping voter loyalty ahead of the election.

What to watch: Whether the government can demonstrate tangible improvements before polling day, how opposition candidates address the cost of living and security, and whether voters believe the promises made during the campaign.

2. Wike’s Rainbow Coalition Versus The APC’s Own Machinery

The main question: Can Tinubu benefit from opposition politicians without weakening his own party?

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is promoting a cross-party arrangement to mobilise support for Tinubu while allowing participating politicians to support candidates from different parties in governorship and legislative elections.

The arrangement, known as the Rainbow Coalition, has exposed tensions between Wike’s strategy and the interests of APC governors and party loyalists. Punch reported on October 18 that the appointment of Wike, Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke and Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo to Tinubu’s campaign structure had unsettled some APC stakeholders and opposition candidates. The coalition could help Tinubu attract support in areas where the APC lacks uncontested political dominance. However, it also raises questions about whether local APC candidates will receive the same level of support as the president.

What to watch: Whether the coalition translates into votes for Tinubu, how APC loyalists respond, and whether its members can reconcile their presidential support with their parties’ competing interests in other races.

3. The Battle For Northern Nigeria

The main question: Who can win the North’s diverse political constituencies?

Northern Nigeria will be an important battleground because of its large electorate, regional diversity and the political weight of states such as Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Borno, Sokoto and Bauchi.

Tinubu’s campaign will need to defend support in states the APC won in 2023 while seeking gains elsewhere. Atiku will be looking to retain and expand his established northern base, while Obi and other opposition figures will seek to convert their support into broader electoral strength.

ThisDay identified the North as a major test for Tinubu in its October 19 analysis, while Punch reported in September that the leading presidential camps were seeking to expand their 2023 strongholds.

It would be misleading, however, to treat the North as a single voting bloc. Party loyalty, ethnicity, religion, local political alliances, insecurity and economic conditions can produce different outcomes from one state to another.

What to watch: Campaign strength in Kano and Kaduna, the influence of northern political leaders, and whether opposition parties can coordinate their appeal across the region.

4. The South-West: Tinubu’s Home Base Under Pressure

The main question: Can the APC retain its regional advantage?

The South-West is central to Tinubu’s political history and the APC’s electoral strategy. But the region should not be assumed to be automatically secured for the president.

Opposition parties can challenge the APC by mobilising voters around economic hardship, local political grievances and dissatisfaction with government performance. The political ambitions of other South-West leaders could also complicate the contest.

Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde’s ambitions can also be seen as a potential challenge to the APC’s dominance in the region.

What to watch: Whether Lagos remains a reliable APC stronghold, whether opposition parties can make gains in Oyo and other states, and how local political disputes influence the presidential vote.

5. INEC, Electoral Credibility And The Battle Over Voters’ Trust

The main question: Will Nigerians trust the process enough to participate?

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) faces a major test in conducting a credible election, enforcing electoral rules and communicating clearly with voters and political parties.

Opposition figures have repeatedly raised concerns about electoral transparency, while the election will also test parties’ ability to protect their votes through lawful monitoring, accurate collation of results, and the use of available dispute-resolution mechanisms.

The timetable and campaign rules matter, too. INEC’s official schedule is available through its 2027 election timetable, although journalists should cross-check it against subsequent revisions and the applicable Electoral Act.

What to watch: INEC’s operational preparedness, voter registration and accreditation, result transmission and collation, election security, campaign-rule enforcement and the handling of complaints.

6. The Battle For South East/South South, Where Obi Won The Last Time.

Peter Obi’s strong performance in the South-East and parts of the South-South in 2023 presents a major challenge for Tinubu and the APC ahead of the next election. Running on the Labour Party platform, Obi won all five South-East states and secured victories in several other states, including Delta and Akwa Ibom.

The question for 2027 is whether Obi can retain that support under a different political platform, particularly amid opposition realignments, or whether Tinubu can make inroads through political alliances and state-level power brokers.

The South-South will be especially important because the 2023 results showed that the region was not politically uniform: Tinubu won Rivers and Cross River, while Obi and other opposition candidates secured victories elsewhere.

What to watch: Obi’s ability to retain his core supporters, the influence of governors and local political structures, and whether the APC can expand its support across the two regions.

7.  Battle For Acceptance By The International Community Ahead Of The Polls

Beyond securing votes at home, Nigeria’s political leaders will face scrutiny from international observers and democratic institutions over the credibility, transparency and peaceful conduct of the 2027 election.

The European Union has confirmed plans to deploy an Electoral Expert Mission comprising two to four independent experts. Separately, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) conducted pre-election consultations in late October 2026 to assess preparations and potential challenges.

The International Republican Institute’s August assessment also highlighted concerns about opposition fragmentation, election-related violence, vote-buying and public confidence in electoral institutions.

For Tinubu’s government, the challenge will be to demonstrate that the election is transparent, peaceful and competitive. Opposition parties, meanwhile, will seek to ensure that their concerns about the electoral process receive attention and that their candidates can campaign freely.

What to watch: International observers’ assessments, diplomatic engagement with the government and opposition, election-day transparency, and how authorities respond to concerns raised by monitoring missions.
