Residents and stakeholders in Oyo State have expressed their views and expectations on the local government chairmanship and councillorship elections slated for December 29, 2026, by the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC).
Some residents and members of Civic Society Organisations who spoke with LEADERSHIP Weekend in Ibadan demanded credibility and transparency from OYSIEC led by chairman, Dr. Afees Adeniyi.
A resident, Abimbola Ajao, called on the electoral umpire to deliver a free, fair, and credible process across all 33 local government areas.
The commission had publicly assured residents of adherence to electoral guidelines, and the final list of candidates has already been published for public verification at OYSIEC and local council offices.
According to her, residents look forward to electing local leaders who will address grassroots infrastructural needs, such as local roads, healthcare centers, sanitation, and community development, rather than treating council seats as nominal positions.
Another resident, Adetunji Olawale said given the high stakes leading into the 2027 general elections, he expressed anxiety over potential political tensions, violence, or security breaches during the campaigns and voting period, making peaceful conduct a primary expectation.
It would be recalled that major opposition groups, such as the All Progressives Congress (APC) have criticized and rejected the election process, alleging that it is designed to favor the ruling party—and have signaled non-participation, leading to a divided political atmosphere among residents.
