The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has assured Nigerians that electricity supply will begin to improve within 48 to 72 hours as the federal government works to restore generating units affected by the current outages.
Tegbe agreed that the disruptions had placed serious strain on households and businesses in four affected states, including Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory.
He explained that planned maintenance at the Egbin Power Station and constraints in gas supply to some thermal power stations had reduced the amount of electricity available on the national grid.
According to the minister, the reduction in available power forced grid operators to introduce load shedding in some areas to manage the shortfall. Load shedding involves temporarily cutting supply to some customers when electricity generation cannot meet demand.
Tegbe also said sabotage of key transmission lines had restricted the use of alternative routes to supply some locations, especially Lagos.
“My team and I are working to return the affected generating units to service in phases, with the first units coming back online within the next 48 to 72 hours,” he said.
The minister said the government was working with power operators to improve gas supply and speed up repairs on damaged infrastructure.
He thanked Nigerians for their patience and promised to provide further updates as electricity supply is gradually restored.
“I thank everyone affected for their patience and will provide further updates as supply is gradually restored,” Tegbe said.
The minister’s update came amid growing concern over prolonged blackouts in parts of the country, particularly Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Kwara and Oyo states.
Tegbe, said the federal government was working to return affected generating units to service in phases.
He said the first units were expected to come back online within the next 48 to 72 hours.
“Sabotage of key transmission lines has also restricted the use of alternative routes to supply some locations, especially Lagos.”
