The quiet atmosphere that once characterised ASCO Camp, one of the residential estates belonging to the Ajaokuta Steel Company in Kogi State, was shattered by a tragic incident involving two serving police officers who were reportedly lovebirds before their relationship took a troubled turn, culminating in their deaths under circumstances that have continued to generate grief, outrage and questions about institutional responsibility. IBRAHIM OBANSA, writes.
While many love relationships that begin in the workplace have blossomed into lasting marriages, others have ended in tragic circumstances, reminding us that relationships can sometimes take a painful and devastating turn.
The alleged killing of a female police officer, Corporal Grace Onimisi, by her lover colleague, Corporal Amos Yusuf, who reportedly later died from a gunshot wound in what the police described as an apparent suicide, is one such heartbreaking incident. The tragedy has thrown the community into mourning and raised serious concerns about the dangers of unresolved relationship conflicts.
Corporal Yusuf was said to have shot and killed his female colleague and romantic partner, Woman Corporal Grace Abraham/Onim), before turning the gun on himself during night duty at ASCO Camp in Ajaokuta local government area.
Timeline Of The Incident
Corporal Amos Yusuf reportedly resumed duty as a station guard at approximately 6:00 p.m.. Investigators found that around 9:00 p.m., he abandoned his assigned night-duty post and went to the residential quarters of Woman Corporal Grace Onimisi (Abraham) with his service weapon.
What The Family Revealed: Statements from the family and neighbors indicate that an argument broke out inside her room. Amos threatened her with the rifle, prompting Grace to run outside into the camp to save herself. Amos pursued her and shot her multiple times out in the open before shooting himself.
History of Domestic Violence & Official Intervention
Our correspondent gathered that sources within the Ajaokuta division revealed to investigators that the relationship had severely deteriorated due to deep-seated mistrust, jealousy, and mutual allegations of infidelity. Their fights had previously escalated to physical violence.
Was The Command Aware?
The situation was well-known to their superiorsl. The Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) had previously intervened, placed both officers in detention following a physical altercation, and explicitly ordered them to dissolve the relationship to avoid further workplace conflict.
The Breakup Motive:
LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered that preliminary accounts suggest the immediate trigger for the attack was Grace’s definitive decision to officially end the years-long relationship, which Amos reportedly refused to accept.
Beyond the grief and shock surrounding this incident, it also brings to the fore important questions about emotional intelligence, conflict management, mental health awareness and the welfare of personnel within the Nigeria Police Force.
The incident, which occurred on October 23, 2026, has also reopened conversations about the responsibility of police authorities to identify warning signs among officers, particularly where personal disagreements, emotional instability and access to firearms could combine to produce devastating consequences.
Beyond the immediate tragedy, the deaths have left behind a grieving family demanding justice, a community struggling to understand what happened, and questions about whether earlier interventions could have prevented the loss of two young lives.
For residents of ASCO Camp, the incident was not merely another report of violence. It was a shocking development involving two officers who were familiar faces in the community and whose relationship, according to people who claimed to know them, had reportedly deteriorated over time.
According to the Kogi State Police Command, the incident was reported at about 11:04 p.m. on October 23, 2026.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, the command said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ajaokuta, immediately mobilised a team of officers to the scene following the report.
Preliminary findings, according to the police, indicated that Corporal Yusuf, who was reportedly on night duty, allegedly shot Woman Corporal Onimisi before turning the weapon on himself.
Both officers were subsequently rushed to separate medical facilities, where they were confirmed dead.
Their remains were later deposited at the mortuary of ASCO Hospital.
The police also disclosed that an AK-47 rifle and four expended cartridges were recovered from the scene as exhibits.
Although the circumstances surrounding the incident were still being investigated, the command confirmed that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for an in-depth investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, expressed condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of the deceased officers.
The command also assured members of the public that verified information would be made available as investigations progressed, while warning against speculation over issues that had yet to be established.
However, investigations by LEADERSHIP Sunday indicate that the tragedy may have been preceded by a troubled romantic relationship between the two officers.
Information gathered from sources familiar with the relationship suggested that the deceased officers had reportedly been romantically involved for some years before disagreements began to emerge.
According to a source close to the officers, their relationship became increasingly strained in recent months following allegations of infidelity, mistrust and disagreements over their commitment to one another.
What reportedly began as relationship disagreements allegedly developed into repeated confrontations, with accusations and counter-accusations creating an atmosphere of tension between the two.
The source claimed that the disagreements sometimes escalated into physical confrontations and threats, suggesting that the relationship had become increasingly difficult for both parties.
The source further alleged that the matter had, at some point, attracted the attention of the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO), who reportedly intervened after the officers became involved in repeated disputes.
According to the source, both officers were detained at the divisional level following one of their disagreements.
The DCO was said to have advised them to discontinue the relationship in the interest of peace and to prevent further escalation.
But despite the alleged intervention, the disagreements reportedly persisted.
The source told LEADERSHIP Sunday that the relationship had reached a point where the officers could hardly maintain peace between themselves.
“The two junior police officers had been dating for some years now, but a few months ago, they started having trust issues and cheating allegations. There had been physical fights and threats to the extent that they were detained at some point by the DCO, who later advised them to end the love relationship for the sake of peace,” the source said.
The source further alleged that Yusuf fired three shots at Onimisi before taking his own life.
These accounts, however, remain allegations and have yet to be independently established by the police investigation.
For the family of Woman Corporal Onimisi, the tragedy represents a devastating loss that has left emotional wounds difficult to heal.
The deceased’s mother, Mrs Abraham, who is also a serving police officer currently in Plateau State, said she was traumatised by the news of her daughter’s death. “I am still in shock up till now,” she said.
Speaking with LEADERSHIP Sunday, the grieving mother struggled to contain her emotions while recounting the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s death.
She said she had collapsed when she received the news that her daughter had allegedly been killed by a colleague with whom she was involved in a romantic relationship.
For a mother who also understands the demands and dangers associated with police service, the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s death have made the tragedy particularly painful.
The family is now seeking justice and wants the circumstances surrounding the incident to be thoroughly investigated.
The deceased’s brother, Emmanuel Abraham, who spoke with LEADERSHIP Sunday in a telephone conversation, also narrated what he understood to have happened to his sister.
According to him, his sister sustained multiple gunshot injuries before her colleague allegedly shot himself.
“He shot my sister on the shoulder, lower abdomen and leg before Amos shot himself,” he said.
The brother’s account further underscores the family’s determination to have the incident properly investigated and the circumstances leading to the death of their loved one established.
For the family, the concern goes beyond the official confirmation of the deaths of the two officers. They want answers to questions surrounding the alleged threats, previous disagreements and the circumstances under which the incident occurred.
They also want the police investigation to establish whether there were earlier opportunities to prevent the tragedy.
Some residents who spoke with LEADERSHIP Sunday said they had observed signs of a strained relationship between the two officers before the incident.
Although they could not independently establish what transpired between the deceased officers on the night of the tragedy, they expressed concern that a disagreement allegedly involving threats and physical confrontations could have escalated to such a devastating level.
A resident, Idris Momoh, called on the police authorities to become more proactive in addressing warning signs among personnel.
He argued that the welfare of police officers should not be limited to their professional assignments, stressing that their emotional and psychological well-being also deserved attention.
According to him, the police hierarchy should develop mechanisms for identifying officers going through serious personal difficulties, particularly where such difficulties could affect their conduct and interactions with colleagues.
He maintained that periodic assessments and appropriate counselling could help identify personnel who may require professional support.
Momoh said the incident should serve as a warning to the police institution that issues involving the emotional well-being of officers should not be ignored until they degenerate into emergencies.
Similarly, an engineer with the Ajaokuta Steel Company, Ozomata Nasiru, questioned the response of the police authorities to the alleged disagreements between the two officers.
Nasiru argued that once the authorities became aware that the officers were experiencing persistent relationship problems, measures should have been taken to prevent them from remaining in circumstances that could expose them to further confrontation.
He specifically suggested that transferring one of the officers to another location could have reduced the possibility of continued conflict.
“The police Ogas are not proactive in their conduct. They should have transferred one of them when they noticed that the two were having problems,” he said.
His position reflects the concerns of some residents who believe that the alleged previous confrontations should have prompted stronger administrative intervention.
As the tragic incident continues to generate reactions, both families have reportedly been thrown into deep mourning, with relatives wailing and grieving over the unfortunate loss.
Our Correspondent reports that the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) is currently heading the in-depth probe into the tragedy, with the Kogi State Police Command cautioning against public speculation while official findings are being finalised.
Current Procedural Status
- Forensic Exhibits: The recovered AK-47 rifle and the four expended cartridges are undergoing ballistic analysis at the SCID.
- Institutional Scrutiny: Because internal authorities had previously intervened in the couple’s disputes, the ongoing investigation is also looking into internal accountability regarding why an officer with known domestic threats and a history of relationship-based violence was permitted access to a firearm for night duty.
Meanwhile, relationship experts, Ntomoh Alex and Greatnest Ekppang, have cautioned against engaging in romantic relationships within the workplace, highlighting the potential dangers and emotional consequences that may arise when professional and personal relationships become intertwined.
The experts advised individuals to pay close attention to warning signs in any relationship and to prioritise their safety and well-being. They further urged people to walk away and cut off relationships once they begin to notice dangerous red flags
However, whether the earlier intervention was sufficient, whether the authorities were fully aware of the extent of the threats, and whether any administrative action could have prevented the incident are questions that only a thorough investigation can adequately address.
LEADERSHIP Weekend writes that , while the circumstances surrounding the incident require thorough investigation, it serves as a sobering reminder of the need to promote healthy interpersonal relationships, provide accessible psychological support and establish effective mechanisms for addressing emotional distress among police officers. No relationship disagreement should ever escalate into the loss of human lives.
