The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero has charged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to intensify the enlightenment of Nigerians on the benefits of the cashless policy.

The eminent traditional ruler spoke at his palace in Kano when the CBN Committee headed by Alhaji Muhammad Hamisu Musa, a deputy director in the apex bank visited yesterday.

Emir Bayero said although the policy has a lot of advantages, its implementation has created more hardships for Nigerians.

He said, “The CBN needs to sit with stakeholders, especially GSM service providers, businessmen, both manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and educate them on the need to go cashless for their own good and once this is done, the people would adopt it as means of doing business.”

The Emir promised that traditional leaders would encourage Nigerians to embrace the policy because it is for their progress and development and asked the apex bank to change its approach.

“You know people are normally inimical to changes and the cashless policy is an entirely new phenomena to them hence need time to adopt it,” he said.

Earlier, Musa said they were in the palace to seek the support of the monarch to lend his voice on the resolve of the bank to engage traders and artisans to embrace the cashless policy as a means of easing way of doing business.

“We were in this palace previously when the cashless policy was introduced and we sought for the cooperation of the Emir towards mobilising his subjects to accept the new policy. Today, we came back to the Emir to reiterate a similar call on you to talk to your subjects on the need to use less of the Naira and utilise other electronic means to transact their businesses,” he said.

Musa said so long as the business community in Kano would stick to the cashless policy there would be reduction in risk-taking, security problems like kidnappings and insurgency, would vanish with time.
