The Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) has launched its Girls in Golf initiative to introduce young girls to the sport and create development pathways for the next generation of female golfers in Nigeria.

The programme, which attracted more than 60 girls, was held on Monday at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja, as part of activities leading up to the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT).

LGAN President and Chairperson of the Local Organising Committee, Dr Lami Ahmed, said the initiative was designed to extend golf’s impact beyond competition by investing in young people and creating opportunities for their development.

She explained that introducing girls to golf at an early age would help develop their interest in the sport, build confidence and equip them with skills that could open doors to future careers.

“We believe that charity calls on us to touch lives and invest in others. Golf is not just about playing the game; it is also about giving back to society,” Ahmed said.

She noted that the future of women’s golf depended largely on creating opportunities for young girls to learn the game and develop the skills required to compete at different levels.

According to her, the initiative would expose participants to the various opportunities available in golf, including professional playing careers and other areas within the sport.

Ahmed also pointed to the growing number of female caddies across the country, stressing the need to establish structured pathways that would enable more girls to participate and explore opportunities in the game.

She expressed appreciation to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, founder of the Renewed Hope Initiative, for supporting the programme and the 2026 AACT.

“Her Excellency readily embraced the project because she believes in giving back to society, especially by supporting children and creating opportunities for them to thrive,” she said.

On preparations for the continental championship, Ahmed disclosed that arrangements were progressing well, with participating teams from different African countries already arriving in Abuja.

The week-long competition is expected to feature teams from at least 20 African countries, with the championship scheduled to conclude on Friday.

The AACT is one of Africa’s major women’s amateur golf competitions, providing a platform for female golfers across the continent to showcase their abilities and compete for continental honours.

Ahmed reaffirmed LGAN’s commitment to using golf as a vehicle for youth development, women’s empowerment and increased female participation in sports.

She also called on stakeholders to support initiatives that would make the sport more accessible to young girls and establish sustainable pathways for their involvement in golf.
