The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) is set to hold its highly anticipated elective congress on Saturday, August 16, with incumbent president, Dr Ibrahim Abdul Aladi, aiming for re-election to build upon his transformative achievements during his first term.
Dr Abdul, who has led the NWF since his election on September 30, 2021, has overseen a significant advancement in the sport, marked by improved performances from Nigerian athletes on both continental and global stages. His administration prioritised athletes’ welfare and the development of training facilities, resulting in notable successes for Nigeria’s weightlifting contingent.
Meanwhile the electoral committee for the elections has cleared a total of 14 candidates to contest various positions. Dr Abdul is the sole candidate for the presidency, reflecting the confidence in his leadership.
According to a statement from NWF Media Officer Mr Amaechi Agbo, the upcoming congress will see fierce competition for several key positions. Four candidates are vying for the post of Vice President: Iquaiborn Lawrence Tom, Ibeh Luke Onwumere, Olarinoye Steve, and Nwankwo Innocent Chukwuma.
Additionally, five candidates are competing for the role of Executive Board Member, including Lasisi Kazeem Aderemi, Okoro Louis Azubuike, Zana Umara, Sen. Hussaini Babangide Uba, and Ini Okon.
The Technical Representative position will see three candidates battling it out: Onubaye Sefiya, Nwadel Christopher, and Utobo Emmanuel Nwafor. Finally, 2022 Commonwealth Bronze Medallist Osijo Taiwo stands alone as the candidate for the position of Athletes’ Representative.
The 2025 NWF Elective Congress is scheduled to take place at the Gymnasium Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Package B, commencing at 10am. The event promises to shape the future of weightlifting in Nigeria as stakeholders gather to elect their leaders for the next term.
