The Abia State Government has announced a ban on commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as okada, within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia, effective Monday, June 22, 2026.

The state government said the move is part of efforts to strengthen security, improve public safety, enhance traffic management and promote a more organised transportation system across the affected urban centres.

The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday.

According to the statement, all commercial motorcycle operators are required to cease operations within the designated metropolitan areas before the ban takes effect.

“This policy forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security, enhance public safety, improve traffic management, and promote a more organised transportation system across the affected urban centres,” the statement read.

The government also directed security agencies and relevant enforcement authorities to ensure strict compliance with the directive.

It warned that any operator who violates the order would face arrest and forfeiture of the motorcycle used in the illegal operation.

“Any individual or operator found violating this order shall be arrested, while the motorcycle involved shall be confiscated in accordance with the law,” the statement added.

The state government appealed to residents, transport operators, community leaders and other stakeholders to cooperate with authorities in implementing the policy.

It described the ban as a necessary measure to safeguard lives and property, improve orderliness and support the state’s development agenda.

The government further urged all affected persons to take immediate note of the directive and comply fully.

With the latest decision, Abia joins a growing number of states across Nigeria that have restricted commercial motorcycle operations in major urban centres over concerns relating to security, traffic congestion and public safety.
