Abia State government has intensified its campaign on environmental sanitation by approving the construction and deploying of 100 new waste receptacle bins across the state.

The Alex Otti-led administration had on assumption of office in May 2023 declared a state of emergency on education, health, and environment.

The commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu stated this while briefing the media on the outcome of this week’s executive council meeting presided over by Otti in Umuahia, the capital.
He said, “The Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) is to oversee the initiative, with the construction of the bins being handled by Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba.”

“With the deployment of the new bins, it is hoped that the laudable waste disposal and sanitation activities of ASEPA will take the state to an even higher level of cleanliness.”

According to Kanu, the state Ministry of Works, through Direct Labour project is at present working at 48 different locations out of which five had been completed.
