Association of Nigerian Physicians in America will offer free medical outreach in Abia State from April 4 to April 14 this year as their contribution to the wellbeing of the people.
In the same manner, the government will hold a Glaucoma Week in the state from 10th to 16th of this month to create awareness on and measures against the disease.

The commissioner for information and culture, Okey Kanu, announced these when he addressed the press on the outcome of this week’s executive council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
He said the outreach will involve 65 medical doctors, over 5,000 treatments and 200 surgeries and called on the people to register early in preparation for the services.

“The surgeries will focus on such areas like colon cancer and prostate enlargement among others. It will be like the free medical services we had last year,” he added.
His counterpart of the Ministry of Health, Ngozi Okoronkwo, said the administration is excited about the outreach because top Nigerian surgeons and consultants will be involved.
She, therefore, advised adults from age 40 and above to visit designated centres across the three senatorial districts of the state “for test before the arrival of the team”.

“From this weekend, most likely, the centres will be made available to start running tests for the people that will be able to access the chronoscope care when they arrive,” she said.
Speaking on the awareness, the senior special assistant to the governor on special duties, Betty Emeka-Obasi said the administration is focused on revolutionising the health sector.

Dr Emeka-Obasi, who said the theme for the week is “Uniting for a glaucoma free world” urged the people to turn out en mass for the awarenesses as “the disease is one of the leading causes of blindness in black Africa.”
