‎Abia Debt Management Office has assured that the state government would settle the balance of over N30bn of the N191.2 it inherited from previous administrations.

‎General manager of the office, Benson Nwigburu who spoke to LEADERSHIP Sunday placed the state first among others in reducing domestic debt.

‎He said, “The state government under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti is on course to fully become debt-free by the end of the last quarter of 2025.”

‎Nwigburu, who explained that the period under review covered March 2024 to March 2025, also said the administration had been transformative in reducing the debt.

‎The general manager listed beneficiaries of the repayment to include workers and pensioners who had been paid arrears of salaries and pensions, financial institutions and  contractors.

‎Lauding Otti for making accountability his watchword, he added that the feat was not just an economic achievement but also a symbol of responsive governance and a legacy for generations to come.

‎The DMO report within the period under review showed that the state reduced the debt by 57.2 percent, thus making it the highest reduction across the country.
