Abiodun, Minister Seek Collaboration To Develop sports As Youth Basketball Festival Opens In Ogun

Governor Dapo Abiodun on Friday urged private individuals, corporate organisations, associations and foundation to collaborate with Ogun State Government to develop sports further in the state.

Abiodun said that since the last National Sports Festival hosted by the state early this year, it has continued to experience a surge in sports programs and competitions, stressing that there was the need for partnership to grow sports, create more environment for young to discover their talents in sports and other innovations.

The Governor spoke on Friday at the Alake Sports Center, Ijeja Abeokuta while declaring open the ‘Bosun Tijani Foundation Festive Basketball Tournament’ which drew participating team from states – Lagos, Kastina, Ogun; the host state, Osun, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) among others.

The competition was the initiative of Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani.

The Governor who represented by his deputy, Mrs Noimot Salako – Oyedele, commended the Minister for the vision in to empower the youth through sports.

“We are particularly excited about the new spirit of sportsmanship and collaboration this festival embodies. I urge individuals, associations, foundations, and corporate entities to seize this opportunity to partner with the Ogun State Government in our collective effort to further develop sports within our state and across Nigeria.

“You will agree with me that since the last National Sports Festival, Ogun State has experienced a surge in sports programs and competitions. This is a testament to the unwavering support of our Governor, His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, and we are immensely grateful for his commitment to sports development.” he said.

Speaking earlier, Minister Tunji Bosun said that the festival ending on Sunday, is meant to youth, talent, and community, stressing that the platform will uplift young people not just in Ogun State but also across the country.

According to him, the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is making conscious investment in the future of young people, communities and the nation.

He said, “This initiative is designed to create a joyful and inclusive space where young people can come together, express themselves freely, build confidence, and form lasting connections through shared experiences, teamwork, and healthy competition. When young people are supported in environments like this, they reveal their potential not only as athletes, but as leaders and contributors to society.

“The initiative reflects the kind of society we must continue to build in Nigeria, one where opportunities for growth, belonging, and self-discovery are accessible to young people regardless of where they come from. During this festive period, the tournament serves as a reminder that community, creativity, and positive outlets matter just as much as competition.”
