A popular Benin-based stand up comedian, Ephraim Osayuwamen Osifo, has opened up about the silent battles within the comedy scene while doubling down on his mission to use humour as a weapon against cultism and youth violence in Edo State.

But behind the humour lies a deeply personal story shaped by loss, fear and a determination to end cultism among youths.

In a candid chat on his birthday celebration, Osifo, the Graduate of Threatre Arts and communication from the University of Benin, alleged that there was a “cold war” among comedians in Benin City, claiming that some big names engaged in more spiritual battles than physical ones.

Despite the tension, he praised fellow comedian MC Casino for standing out as a pillar of encouragement in the industry.

“Casino believes that lighting your candle makes the room brighter. He wants everybody to grow,” Osifo said, applauding his colleague’s spirit of unity in an industry often marked by rivalry.

Beyond industry politics, Osifo with brand name of ‘Samba De comic’ is channelling his energy into a more pressing cause tackling cultism and negative social influences among youths.

Through his comedy, he addresses violence, peer pressure, and the lure of street life, using his act and storytelling to spark conversations that matter.

For him, comedy is no longer just about punchlines and applause. It is a platform for transformation.

“I don’t just want to be an epitome of a good image in sensitising people and changing negative narratives. I want to take my craft to a global audience.”

Osifo also called on individuals and corporate organisations to invest in Edo State’s entertainment and creative industry, lamenting that lack of support has forced many talented youths to relocate to Lagos in search of opportunities.

“Our people must learn to invest in entertainment to discourage our youths from leaving Benin,” he urged.

Determined and optimistic, Osifo sees comedy as a movement, one aimed at reclaiming the streets from cultism, inspiring hope, and shaping a new generation through laughter and positive change.
