Adamawa Government Transforms Yola South Market Into Modern Trading Hub

The Adamawa State Government has recorded significant progress in the reconstruction of the Yola South Market, turning the once fire-prone commercial centre into a modern trading hub in line with Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s commitment to infrastructural development and sustainable economic growth.

The project, supervised by the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry, is being executed under the leadership of the Commissioner, Dr. Ishaya John Dabari, as part of the state government’s broader infrastructure renewal programme.

Officials said the reconstruction is aimed at providing traders with a safer, fire-resistant and more organized market environment, while also enhancing commercial activities and boosting the state’s internally generated revenue.

The Yola South Market, one of the busiest commercial centres in the state, has in the past suffered repeated fire outbreaks, almost on a yearly basis, resulting in heavy losses for traders and disrupting economic activities.

To address these challenges, the state government awarded the contract for the construction of internal roads, drainage systems and solar-powered street lighting to Amijapp Nigeria Limited, with an initial completion timeline of 24 weeks.

However, the project has recorded remarkable progress, with most components completed within just 14 weeks.

Following a recent assessment, officials confirmed that drainage works, culverts and the installation of solar-powered street lights have been completed 100 per cent, while asphaltic concrete works have reached about 97 per cent completion. Road markings, according to the Ministry, are scheduled to be carried out in January.

Observers say the early delivery of the project underscores the Fintiri administration’s determination to execute quality infrastructure projects efficiently, while improving the business environment and safety of traders and residents in Yola South.
