AEDC Restoring Maitama Power as Substation Repairs Continue

Repair work has begun at the C2 Maitama substation after authorities resolved a dispute over an alleged land-grab that forced Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to suspend power to parts of Maitama and neighbouring areas.

AEDC suspended supply on 10 July after the substation was reportedly invaded and encroached upon by individuals described by the company as land grabbers, allegedly led by an Assistant Director at the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA). The company said vital cables and other network equipment were damaged, making continued operation “unsafe and technically impossible.”

The outage affected homes, businesses, diplomatic missions and government offices across Maitama and surrounding districts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The following day AEDC said it had escalated the incident to the FCT Administration.

AEDC said ministers Nyesom Wike (FCT) and Joseph Tegbe (Power) intervened, helping to secure a resolution that enabled engineers to return to the site. In a statement on Tuesday, the distribution company said the intervention “paved the way for the commencement of repair works and the restoration of electricity supply to the affected communities.”

AEDC confirmed its technical teams have mobilised to begin reinstatement of damaged infrastructure and said it is working to complete repairs “safely and restore supply to customers in the shortest possible time.” The company expressed appreciation to both ministers for their “swift intervention” and thanked customers for their patience.

The substation serves key residential areas, government institutions and foreign missions in Maitama, underscoring its strategic role in the FCT’s power network. AEDC said it remains committed to protecting critical electricity infrastructure and delivering reliable supply to customers.
