Nigeria is making a significant impact at the ongoing African Senior Weightlifting Championship in Mauritius, leading the medal standings with an impressive haul of 7 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze as the competition approaches its climax.

Rafiatu Lawal (59KG) and Didih Onome (55KG) have been standout performers, each securing three gold medals in their respective weight categories. Lawal, the 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, showcased her exceptional skills, dominating the 59KG event with both confidence and finesse.
“I came here prepared, and I knew I had to give it everything. The support from the Federation and the National Sports Commission has been incredible, giving us the edge. This gold is for Nigeria,” Lawal stated proudly.

Onome, who excelled in the 55KG category, echoed the team’s determination. “We came to Mauritius on a mission—to demonstrate the strength of Nigerian weightlifting. Every lift is for the green and white. I dedicate these medals to Dr. Ibrahim Abdul and the NSC, whose leadership continues to inspire us,” she remarked.

In addition to their remarkable performances, Edidiong Joseph secured one gold and two silver medals in the 73KG category, while Tuesday Emmanuel contributed two silver medals and one bronze to Nigeria’s total.

Medal prospects Omolola Matthew and Sarah Ovayioza are still competing in their categories, with Sarah set to compete on Friday, while Omolola remains active as of the latest reports.

Motivating the team ahead of the competition’s peak in Moka, the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, announced a generous incentive package for each medal the team secures. Earlier in the week, Hon. Olopade also revealed that four lifters have been upgraded to Category

A of the Elite Athletes Programme, receiving training grants totalling $20,000, starting with an initial $5,000 payment next week.

The African Senior Weightlifting Championship will continue until April 28, with Team Nigeria aiming for further podium finishes and solidifying its dominance on the continental stage.
