Association of Housing Corporations of Nigeria (AHCN) has prescribed a pragmatic approach to addressing the growing housing deficit in the country.
The president of the association, Esv. Eno Obongha, made the suggestion in Abuja at the 2024 World Habitat Day celebration with the theme “Engaging Youth to Create A Better Urban Future”.
Obongha said the task of resolving the nation’s housing deficit could be achieved through renewed government commitment to social housing, adding that governments at federal and state levels should disengage from direct housing construction and focus on creating the enabling environment for investors to strive.
He emphasised that government should also assist private developers or investors in accessing funding for housing projects and create Afric-villages in the country.
While explaining that the Afric-villages is a vehicle for sustained development which will drastically reduce rural-to-urban migration and thereby encourage urban-to- rural migration, he said the villages would further assist in reducing housing deficit associated with overcrowding of urban centers.
