AI-Generated Financial Reports Pose Fresh Governance Risks – Audit Institute

The growing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in preparing corporate financial reports has introduced fresh governance risks, with audit professionals urged to strengthen their understanding of the technology to protect the integrity of financial reporting.

Chairman of the Audit Committee Institute, Christian Ekeigwe, gave the warning on Wednesday at the 2026 Audit Committee Conference held in Lagos, with the theme, “Guardians of Truth: Informed, Vigilant, and Attending.”

Ekeigwe said while AI has become increasingly embedded in accounting and audit processes, including financial reporting, risk assessment and audit procedures, professionals must not rely on technology at the expense of human judgement and ethical responsibility.

He warned that the increasing use of generative AI in preparing financial disclosures presents significant risks, particularly the possibility of AI-generated inaccuracies or “hallucinations” that appear convincing despite being factually incorrect.

According to him, recent academic research shows that AI is already being deployed to draft sections of corporate financial reports, including management discussions, risk factors, and going-concern disclosures, making it imperative for auditors, accountants, and audit committee members to critically evaluate AI-generated content rather than accept it at face value.

“The most acute risk is not that AI will replace auditors. It is that auditors will stop thinking and defer to the machine in their place,” he said.

Describing auditors, accountants and audit committee members as the “guardians of financial truth,” Ekeigwe stressed that their role has become even more critical as organisations increasingly depend on AI-powered tools.

While acknowledging that AI offers benefits such as faster analysis, anomaly detection and full-population testing of transactions, he maintained that the technology cannot replace professional judgement, scepticism and ethical responsibility.

He argued that the profession’s response to AI should not be limited to introducing new procedures or compliance checklists, but should focus on cultivating stronger critical thinking and professional judgement.

According to him, staying informed requires continuous learning not only about accounting standards and regulations but also about how AI systems function, their limitations, and the risks associated with their deployment in financial reporting.

He explained that vigilance now extends beyond traditional professional scepticism to questioning both the reliability of AI systems and the credibility of the outputs they generate.

Speaking on the conference’s third pillar, “Attending,” Ekeigwe said professionals must remain fully engaged with the substance of financial information by paying attention not only to disclosed information but also to omissions, inconsistencies and contextual factors that machines cannot recognise.

Ekeigwe further noted that although AI excels at analysing vast datasets and identifying unusual patterns, it lacks the human capacity for abductive reasoning—the ability to interpret incomplete evidence, assess intent and exercise moral judgement in complex situations.

He said these uniquely human qualities remain indispensable in detecting sophisticated financial misstatements and preserving investor confidence.

The Audit Committee Institute chairman also called on audit committees to develop sufficient AI literacy to effectively oversee management’s use of the technology, warning that approving AI-generated disclosures without understanding how they were produced amounts to “the ceremonial performance of governance” rather than genuine oversight.

He added that the greatest challenge posed by artificial intelligence is not technological but intellectual, urging professionals to embrace AI while preserving the independent thinking, ethical judgement and professional scepticism that underpin trust in financial reporting.
