No fewer than 700 residents of Surulere Local Government Area of Lagos State have benefited from a free medical outreach organised by the Akpabio Cares Initiative, a humanitarian programme driven by the Office of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
The medical outreach, held on Saturday, provided free consultations, essential drugs and eyeglasses to vulnerable members of the community.
Details of the programme were contained in a statement issued to journalists yesterday in Abuja by the media team of the Senate President. The Surulere outreach marked the third edition of the initiative in the past two years, following similar interventions in Osogbo, Osun State, and Yankaba, Kano State.
Speaking during the event, Ahmed Mustapha, the convener of the programme and Senior Legislative Aide to the President of the Senate, said the initiative aimed to give back to society, particularly in the area of healthcare.
“We are doing this as a way to give back to society, and we believe that the best gift is that of good health,” Mustapha said.
He noted that the Lagos outreach was designed to reach about 700 beneficiaries through free medical consultations, drugs and eyeglasses.
Explaining the choice of Lagos for the programme rather than Akpabio’s home state of Akwa Ibom, Mustapha said the Senate President holds a national office whose impact should be felt nationwide.
“Senator Godswill Akpabio is Senate President for the whole of Nigeria, and so his impact must be felt across the country,” he said.
Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation to Akpabio and the organisers for the intervention. One of them thanked the Senate President for remembering the community and offered a prayer for continued success in his leadership role.
Another beneficiary commended the appointment of Mustapha, noting that his roots in the Surulere community played a key role in attracting the outreach to the area.
“I am appreciative that the Senate President appointed Mustapha, who grew up in this community and has brought dividends of democracy to us,” the beneficiary said.
Mustapha assured that the Akpabio Cares Initiative would continue nationwide, adding that the following medical outreach would take place in the North Central geopolitical zone.
