After more than a decade of service, Nigerian defender Kevin Akpoguma is poised to part ways with Bundesliga side TSG 1899 Hoffenheim when the current season concludes.
The 31-year-old centre-back’s departure marks the close of a significant chapter for both player and club, as his expiring contract will not be renewed by Die Kraichgauer.
Akpoguma first arrived at Hoffenheim in 2013, transferring from Karlsruher SC as a promising young talent. Over the years, he gained valuable experience through loan spells at Fortuna Düsseldorf and Hannover 96, gradually returning to Hoffenheim to cement his status as a dependable figure in the heart of defense.
His commitment and consistency saw him become a key squad member, known for his physical presence, reading of the game, and versatility across the backline.
However, the 2024–25 season has brought limited playing time for the former Germany youth international (who later switched his international allegiance to Nigeria).
Akpoguma has featured in only eight matches for Hoffenheim this term, a sharp decline from previous campaigns.
The club’s decision not to offer a contract extension reflects a shift toward younger personnel and a changing tactical setup under the current coaching staff.
Fans will have one final chance to see Akpoguma in a home shirt this weekend, when Hoffenheim host SV Werder Bremen at the PreZero Arena.
That fixture represents his last home appearance for the club, and an emotional send-off is expected for a player who has given 13 years of professional service to the region.
As the summer transfer window approaches, speculation will grow over Akpoguma’s next destination. With his wealth of Bundesliga experience and leadership qualities, several clubs—both in Germany and abroad—could view him as a valuable free-agent addition.
For now, all eyes turn to Saturday, where a long-serving defender will take his final bow in front of the Hoffenheim faithful.
