Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will miss next month’s French Open after confirming he is still struggling with a wrist injury.
The world number two sustained the issue during his opening match at the Barcelona Open, forcing him to withdraw from the tournament. Subsequent medical tests have now ruled him out of both the Italian Open and Roland Garros.
In a message shared on social media, the 22-year-old explained that the decision was made as a precaution while doctors continue to assess the injury.
“This is a difficult moment,” Alcaraz said. “But it is important to be cautious, and I am confident I will return stronger.”
The Spaniard had enjoyed a remarkable start to the year, winning his first Australian Open title and completing a career Grand Slam at a notably young age. His absence from the clay-court season, however, represents a significant setback.
Alcaraz had dominated on clay last year, winning titles in Monte Carlo, Rome, and Paris. His withdrawal opens the door for rivals, particularly world number one Jannik Sinner, who now has a major opportunity to extend his lead at the top of the rankings and potentially complete his own career Grand Slam.
Since breaking onto the scene, Alcaraz has rarely missed major tournaments, making this only the second Grand Slam absence of his career. His recovery timeline remains uncertain, but his focus is firmly on regaining full fitness.
