Algeria made a triumphant return to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finals for the first time since their 2019 victory, narrowly defeating the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) 1-0 in a tense extra-time encounter at the Moulay Hassan Stadium on yesterday.

Coach Vladimir Petkovic’s side were not at their finest but displayed resilience when it mattered most. The decisive moment came in the dying seconds of extra time, as substitute Adil Boulbina scored a stunning goal in the 119th minute, ensuring Algeria’s progression in the tournament.

The Fennecs are now set to face Nigeria at the Marrakesh Stadium on Saturday, January 10, while the Leopards exit the competition earlier than anticipated, having finished fourth in the previous edition.

In the first half, Algeria maintained slight possession but struggled to create meaningful chances, with DR Congo appearing more threatening. The match began scrappily, devoid of clear opportunities, until the Leopards had their first real attempt on goal in the 25th minute. Cedric Bakambu seized on a long ball but directed his shot wide; however, goalkeeper Luca Zidane was quick to palm it away for a corner.

A header from Axel Tuanzebe almost put DR Congo ahead from the resulting corner, narrowly missing the left post. Bakambu had another chance moments later but failed to test Zidane, who had to stay alert.

Algeria’s best opportunity before the break came from Ibrahim Maza, whose shot from the edge of the box sailed wide of the right post, leaving the first half goalless.

The second half saw further attempts from both sides, with Fares Chaibi missing a header from a Hicham Boudaoui cross shortly after the interval. It wasn’t until the 74th minute that the crowd witnessed a shot on target, as Edo Kayembe forced a smart save from Zidane. Four minutes later, Mpasi was called into action for the first time, denying Anis Hadj Moussam from distance.

The DR Congo keeper remained busy, successfully blocking efforts from Mohamed Amoura and Maza in the closing minutes. A late mistake from Chancel Mbemba almost cost the Leopards, but Mpasi managed to save Chaibi’s strike with expert timing.

As the match appeared destined for penalties, Boulbina’s moment of brilliance changed everything. Cutting inside from the right flank, he unleashed a powerful shot that struck the crossbar before finding the net, sealing a dramatic victory for the Fennecs and igniting celebrations among their supporters.

Algeria now looks forward to the challenge against Nigeria, as they aim to reclaim the AFCON title once more.
