The Obidient Movement has faulted former Borno State governor, Ali Modu Sheriff, over comments questioning the patriotism of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, saying the former governor lacks the moral authority to make such remarks.

In a statement issued by its Media and Communications Directorate, the movement accused Sheriff of avoiding questions on the performance of President Bola Tinubu’s administration during a recent appearance on Channels Television.

According to the group, rather than addressing pressing concerns over insecurity and the economy, Sheriff shifted attention to issues relating to the Nigerian Civil War and Peter Obi.

The movement described the comments as a deliberate attempt to divert public attention from current governance challenges, insisting that national conversations should focus on insecurity, economic hardship, inflation and the rising cost of living.

It stated that Obi had consistently demonstrated commitment to national unity and inclusive development through his actions and investments across regional, ethnic and religious lines.

The group cited Obi’s support for businesses in different parts of the country, including Umza Rice during his tenure as chairman of Fidelity Bank, as evidence of his belief in a united Nigeria.

According to the statement, Obi has also articulated plans to harness the agricultural potential of northern Nigeria to drive economic growth, create jobs and diversify the nation’s revenue base.

The Obidient Movement further dismissed claims questioning Obi’s commitment to Nigeria’s unity, noting that he has consistently advocated dialogue, justice and inclusion as pathways to addressing insecurity and national grievances.

The group also took a swipe at Sheriff’s political record, arguing that he was not in a position to question Obi’s patriotism or commitment to national development.

It urged Nigerians to remain focused on issues of governance, accountability and practical solutions to the country’s economic and security challenges rather than what it described as political distractions.

The statement comes amid growing political exchanges ahead of the 2027 general elections, with supporters of key political figures increasingly engaging in debates over leadership, national unity and governance.
