With just six days remaining before the start of the 3rd National Para Games Abuja 2026, preparations have reached fever pitch as state contingents intensify training for amputee football — one of the most inspiring and fiercely competitive team sports on the programme.

A true test of resilience and skill, amputee football features athletes with lower limb amputations competing in fast-paced seven-a-side matches on a reduced pitch. Using crutches with remarkable precision, players combine balance, agility and tactical intelligence to deliver a spectacle that continues to captivate audiences.

At Abuja 2026, the event will feature two medal contests, with teams representing all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory set to battle for honours. Matches will take place at the FIFA Goal Project Pitch, where fans can expect high-energy encounters defined by determination, passion and elite-level competition.

Speaking ahead of the Games, Assistant Director of the Para Sports Department, Mr Oladipupo Idowu, underscored the growing significance of amputee football in Nigeria.

“Amputee football is a powerful platform that highlights the strength, resilience and determination of our athletes. As we approach the Games, we are confident the event will inspire Nigerians and further promote inclusivity in sport,” he said.

He also pointed to the rising standard of competition, noting that increased investment and participation in para sports nationwide have elevated the quality of teams expected in Abuja.

“The growth we are witnessing is remarkable. The level of preparation across teams shows that competition will be intense, and we anticipate discovering talents capable of representing Nigeria on the international stage,” Idowu added.

Scheduled to run from 26 March to 3 April 2026, the 3rd National Para Games will bring together thousands of athletes in a celebration of excellence, unity and inclusion — reinforcing the enduring message that ability transcends limitation.
