Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi has revealed how a difficult period under former Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti became a turning point in his career.
Iwobi admitted that his failure to follow tactical instructions led to him losing his place in the team.
The Nigerian disclosed that Ancelotti deployed him in several roles, including right wing-back and right midfield, with clear orders to quickly distribute the ball to playmakers like James Rodríguez.
However, Iwobi confessed that he often deviated from the plan, trying to take on too much responsibility. “I learned the hard way,” the Fulham midfielder said.
The situation came to a head after Iwobi posted on social media about wanting to play in his preferred position. Ancelotti addressed it in a press conference and then handed him a start against Burnley.
The experiment backfired, with Everton trailing 2-0 at halftime and Iwobi substituted early in the second half. He was subsequently dropped for the next four matches.
Now 27, Iwobi views that setback as a crucial lesson. He has since sharpened his decision-making and passing, playing a key role for Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and helping Fulham push for a strong finish in the Premier League.
