A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former aspirant during the 2023 governorship primary election in Taraba State, Chief Ezekiel Afukonyo has stated that the party in the state is not prepared to win the February 3 by-election for Jalingo/Yoro/Zing federal constituency.
The election is to fill the vacuum created by the death of Hon Ismail Maihanchi, the member-elect for the constituency in the House of Representatives who died shortly after he won the 2023 election.
Afukonyo stated this while speaking with journalists in his home town in Wukari, the headquarters of Wukari local government area of Taraba State.
He said the internal crisis that rocked the party during the recent governorship election which forced the party to come a distant third position behind the New Nigerians Peoples Party (NNPP) has gone too deep for the party to recover without the intervention of the National Secretariat of the APC.
Afukonyo further revealed that if President Bola Tinubu and the national chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje do not summon stakeholders of the party from the state, it would be difficult for the party to make progress in the state.
“The party structure in the state is not organised. Many people in the party have ill-feelings against others, camp against camps and interest against interest of others. This is so bad as party members are working against the interest of the party in the state.
