As results of last Saturday’s bye-elections across states continue to emerge, major parties, All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have retained control in their strongholds.
In Kebbi State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Hon Garba Uba Bullet and Hon Garba Rabi’u Kamba as winners of the Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski federal constituency and Hon Garba Rabi’u Kamba for Dandi/Arewa federal constituency respectively.
Declaring the result at the collation centre in Yauri, headquarters of Yauri local government area yesterday, the returning officer, Prof. Abbas Yusuf-Bazata of Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), said Uba polled a total of 54,885 to defeat his closest rival, PDP’s Garba Hassan, who got 16,652 votes.
According to INEC, the total number of votes cast stood at 74,469, valid votes were 72,343, while invalid was 2,126.
APC won the Ebonyi South senatorial bye-election. Announcing the result at the INEC office in Afikpo, Afikpo North local government area, the presiding officer, Mr. Eze Uchechukwu said APC’s Okorie Ani polled a total of 46,270 votes to defeat his closest rival, Sir Ifeanyi Eleje of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) who scored a total of 3,513 votes.
Mr. Uchechukwu said the PDP candidate, Barr. Silas Onu, scored a total of 2,783 while the Labour Party candidate, Hon Linus Okorie scored a total of 2,710 votes.
The returning officer further announced that the only female candidate in the bye-election, Mrs. Njoku Stella of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, scored a total of 227 votes.
The election according to observers witnessed voter apathy in the five local government areas of Afikpo, Edda, Ivo, Ohaozara and Onicha which was attributed to lack of interest in the outcome of elections in the Nigeria electoral process.
In Jigawa State, the PDP candidate Hon Yakubu Adamu was declared winner of Birnin Kudu/Buji federal constituency.
The returning officer of the election, Prof Ahmad Baita Garko, said Adamu Yakubu scored 43,053 votes while his closest rival, APC’s Magaji Da”u Aliyu scored 42,544 votes.
LEADERSHIP reports that the court-ordered re-run election was peaceful in all the eight polling units in the constituency of one of PDP’s founding fathers and former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido.
The returning officer for the Lavun constituency rerun election in Niger State House of Assembly, Professor Emanuel Raymond, declared APC’s Ndagi Baba winner with
21,393 votes to defeat the incumbent candidate and PDP’s Yusuf Dabban with 20,802 votes.
APC candidate Hon Shehu Dalhatu Tafoki narrowly emerged winner of the re-run election of Kankara, Faskari Sabuwa federal constituency seat held in Katsina State.
The returning officer of the election, Prof. Aminu Dalha Kankia, said Tafoki scored 49,807 votes to defeat his closest opponent, a former lawmaker representing the constituency on the PDP platform, Hon Jamilu Lion, with 49,067 votes
In Kano State, INEC declared the NNPP winner of two of the three constituency rerun elections for Kano State House of Assembly seats.
The returning officer in Kura/Garun Malam, Prof. Shehu Musa Galadanchi, declared NNPP’s Alhassan Zakariya Ishaq winner with 37,262 votes to beat Musa Hayatu Daurawar of APC with 30,803 votes.
The returning officer in Rimingado/Tofa, Prof. Ibrahim Tajo Suraj, declared Alhaji Bello Muhammad Butu-Butu of NNPP as the winner of rerun election in the area with 31,135 votes to beat his APC opponent with 25,577 votes.
Meanwhile, with this development, the NNPP maintains the majority of seats at the Kano State House of Assembly.
In Bauchi State, PDP won all the four seats in Saturday’s state assembly constituency rerun elections.
Professor Ahmed Abdulkadir, the returning officer for Madara Chinade Constituency, said that Dr Ala Ahmed of the PDP won the election with 13,920 votes to defeat Mr Dantali Ali of the APC with 9,710 votes.
In Bauchi Central, the INEC returning officer, Professor Ismail Shehu, declared Jamilu Dahiru of the PDP winner with 1, 857 votes, while Aliyu Abdullahi of the APC came second with 858 votes.
Our correspondent reports that in the Ningi constituency, the returning officer, Professor Ahmed Abdulhamid, declared Abubakar Suleiman of the PDP winner with 11785 votes while Khalid Ningi of the APC got 339 votes.
In Zungur/Galambi state constituency, the returning officer, Professor Adamu Samaila, declared Yusuf Ahmed of the PDP winner with 2,233 votes, while Ibrahim Yuguda of the APC came second with 1, 928 votes
In Yabo/Shagari Federal Constituency, INEC declared PDP’s Umar Yusuf the winner of the rerun election.
Despite scoring 2,249 votes in the rerun election compared to the APC candidate Abubakar Umar who scored a total of 3,741 votes, Yusuf was declared winner, having led the APC candidate in the substantive election with a total votes of 24,792 against 22,472.
Umar Yusuf Yabo was however declared winner after scoring a total votes of 27,042 while the APC candidate Abubakar Umar scored a total of 25,738 votes.
Similarly, the PDP candidate for Bodinga North state constituency in the re-run election, Magaji Abubakar, was declared winner with 6,488 votes against the APC candidate, Yusuf Marafa Danchadi, with 5,893 votes.
APC, however, won the Tambuwal West State Assembly seat with Dahiru Bashir Ahmed declared the winner with 19,315 votes against PDP’s Hantsi Sule Romo who polled a total number of 19,021 votes.
PDP, in a congratulatory message to the winners, signed by its publicity secretary, Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, commended its supporters across the constituencies for their efforts and dedication despite alleged intimidation by agents of the opposition.
The, PDP, however, rejected the outcome of the re-run election in Tambuwal West State Constituency.
Lawan Pogu of APC won the election for the Chibok State Constituency in Borno State. He scored 9,101 votes. He was followed by the PDP candidate, Habila Bello, who scored 2,117.
The bye-election in Chibok local government area follows the death of the member-elect of Chibok state constituency, late Hon. Nuhu Clark.
INEC has declared minister of Police Affairs Senator Ibrahim Gaidam’s son in-law, Hon. Musa Mustapha, of the APC as the winner of the Yobe East bye-election.
The returning officer for the election, Professor Ibrahim Ahmed Jajere, who declared the results yesterday in Damaturu, Yobe State capital, said Musa Mustapha polled 68,778 votes to defeat Aji Kolomi (Ajiko) of the PDP who got 18,878 votes.
The APC candidate for the Guma I State Constituency in Benue, Terwase Uche, emerged winner yesterday. The returning officer for the election, Prof Julius Ikya of the Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi (JOSTUM), said Uche polled 5,289 votes to defeat PDP’s Geoffrey Jimin who scored 4,134 votes.
In Cross River State, PDP candidate for Obanlikwu state constituency, Ashakia Pius, won the election which includes Yala II state constituencies, also in Cross River North.
Pius polled 275 votes in the two polling units to take his total tally to 10,587 votes, while APC’s Sunday Achunekang scored 243 votes to take his total tally to 10,427 votes.
In the Yala II re-run, Dr. Martins Achadu of PDP polled 9,168 votes to defeat Mrs. Cynthia Nkassi of APC, who polled 8,647 votes. Achadu was declared winner by the returning officer, Mrs. Dorathy Inyang.
APC’s candidate, Dr. Emil Inyang, however won the re-run for Akamkpa/Biase federal constituency, in Cross River South Senatorial district. He beat his PDP rival Mr. Austin Aidam,
APC emerged victorious in Burutu I and Ethiope West constituencies respectively.
In Burutu I, APC candidate Anthony Ebitonmo Alapala was declared winner by INEC ahead of Asupa Forteta of the PDP. Alapala polled 7,728 votes ahead of Asupa, who scored 6,616 votes.
For Ethiope West, the rerun election took place across 30 polling units in the constituency.
At the end of the poll, APC’s Blessing Achoja was declared winner ahead of PDP’s Onogba Blessing. Achoja polled a total of 6462 votes ahead of his closest rival, Onogba, who scored 5057 as declared by the Returning Officer, Prof. Ezekiel Agbalagba.
The result leaves the APC occupying seven of the 29 seats in the Delta State House of Assembly.
APC and NNPP candidates won the rerun elections for the House of Assembly seats held in Nasarawa State.
INEC declared APC’s Mohammed Omadefu and NNPP’s Musa Ibrahim Abubakar winners of the election held for Keana and Doma South State constituencies seats respectively.
Declaring the result of the rerun election in Keana, the constituency’s returning officer, Hassan Imam, said Omadefu of APC polled 557 votes, while Basil Osheka of the PDP scored 470 votes.
He said cumulatively the APC candidate polled 8,069 votes in both the March 18 election and the rerun to defeat his closest rival, Osheka of PDP who got 7, 917 votes in the two elections.
In similar vein, the returning officer, Professor Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, said the combined results of the March 18, 2023, election and the re-run of February 3, 2024, in Doma South State House of Assembly Constituency showed that Musa Ibrahim Abubakar of NNPP scored a total of 4,776 votes to defeat Mr. John Osewu of the APC with 3,931 votes.
Despite pockets of violence during the House of Representatives rerun election for Ikono/Ini federal constituency of Akwa Ibom State which resulted in the cancellation of the exercise in two units in Ikono and Ini local government areas, the opposition Young Progressives Party (YPP) emerged winner of the election.
The incumbent, Hon Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo, defeated the ruling PDP’s candidate, Dr. Glory Edet.
According to the collation officer, Mr. Nabie Jude, the YPP candidate polled a total 24,050 votes to beat his closest challenger and PDP candidate who got 17,232 votes.
Similarly, collation officer, Godwin Ayi, announced YPP candidate Moses Easien, winner of the Ibiono Ibom state constituency rerun poll. He defeated PDP’s candidate, Obong Godwin Ekpo.
