The National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Dayo Isreal, has underscored the essential role of sports in uniting Nigerians and shaping the future of the youth.
Speaking at a youth-focused sports programme, he remarked that, aside from education, few things excite and empower young people as much as sports.
Mr. Isreal who hosted the Chairman of the Sports Commission at the event, explained that the initiative aims to create opportunities for young individuals through both physical and digital games. The showcased facilities included a basketball court, a tennis area, car racing simulations, table tennis, and a modern gaming section for FIFA and other e-sports.
“The chairman just finished playing table tennis here, and of course, he won the rounds,” Dr Isreal said enthusiastically, emphasising that sports are powerful drivers of youth engagement and development.
He revealed that several groundbreaking interventions are already underway, including grassroots sports programmes, school sports initiatives, the NUGA Games, and the integration of scholarships with sporting activities. According to him, these efforts aim to ensure that sports are not merely recreational but serve as platforms for education, empowerment, and global recognition.
“We believe that by the grace of God, by the end of Mr. President’s second term in 2030–2031, Nigeria will be able to host some major global competitions. Understanding that vision helps us appreciate the actions being taken today, as we know where the destination lies,” he said.
Mr. Isreal further assured that the information and insights shared during the event would be disseminated to young people across the country through newsletters, social media platforms, and youth networks.
“For me, that is the highlight of tonight. Many young people, both here and online, were able to engage. The takeaway is to give our youth renewed hope, for this hope in sports is real; it is not a mere distraction,” he concluded.
