All Progressives Congress (APC), Abia State chapter, has zoned its 2027 governorship ticket to Abia Central Senatorial District.
The publicity secretary of the chapter, Uche Aguoru, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Umuahia, the state capital, yesterday.
The statement said the decision is intended to guide party members and intending aspirants in the purchase of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms.
“This decision is taken in the interest of equity, justice, and fair play, and in line with the party’s commitment to balanced representation across the three senatorial zones.
“Since the return of democracy in 1999, Abia State has operated an understanding of power rotation among the three zones to foster unity and inclusiveness.”
It noted that the decision is premised on the fact that the state chairman hails from Abia North, while Abia South produced the immediate past governor of the state.
“It is therefore just and equitable for Abia Central to produce the next governor on the APC platform,” the statement added.
Reacting to the development, a former Minister of State for Science and Technology, Henry Ikoh, who is from Abia Central and an aspirant for the ticket, welcomed the decision.
According to Ikoh, an industrialist and businessman, the decision will promote equity and fairness, which is the hallmark of the state’s Charter of Equity.
However, efforts to reach the camp of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu (Bende Federal Constituency), an aspirant from Abia North, were unsuccessful.
