Ashiru To Uba Sani: Negotiate With ASUU-KASU To Resolve Issues Affecting Them

The gubernatorial candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna State, Rt. Hon. Isa Mohammed Ashiru, has urged governor Uba Sani to return to negotiations with Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kaduna State University chapter (ASUU-KASU) with a view to resolving the issues affecting academic staff at the university.

In a statement issued by Ashiru’s spokesman, Abdulwaheed Olayinka Adubi, the ADC governorship candidate noted that the concerns raised by ASUU-KASU are neither imaginary nor issues that can be wished away through government statements or media campaigns.

Ashiru said the contributions of academics are critical to the development of any society, “Their welfare and working conditions are therefore central to the survival, growth and development of the university system,” he said.

The statement stated, “Instead of dismissing these concerns or attempting to create the impression that all is well, the government should engage the union transparently and provide clear answers to the issues raised by its members.”

Ashiru added, “The government must also understand that the welfare of lecturers is directly connected to the quality of education available to students. A university cannot be expected to deliver excellence when its academic staff are struggling with unresolved welfare and employment-related concerns,” he said.
