The Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Nigeria (ASLIN), Katsina State Chapter, has called for greater inclusion of persons with hearing impairment in governance and public communication in the state.
The call was made during a courtesy visit by the association to the Office of the Special Assistant on Disability Matters, Lt. Hudu Usman (rtd).
The delegation, led by its chairman, Sagir Garba Malumfashi, stressed that effective sign language interpretation remains crucial to ensuring equal access to information, public services, and civic participation for persons who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Malumfashi commended the state government for its increasing attention on disability issues but noted that deliberate policies and structured engagement with professional sign language interpreters were needed to bridge the communication gaps, particularly during official events, public announcements and government programmes.
Responding, Usman welcomed the advocacy and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to inclusive governance.
He assured the association of his office’s readiness to collaborate with it to promote inclusive communication and enhance the welfare of persons with disabilities.
