President Bola Tinubu has described former Chief of Army Staff and elder statesman, General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (rtd), as a steady national voice whose life of duty and sacrifice has shaped Nigeria’s journey through its most defining seasons.

In a goodwill message personally signed by him on Tuesday to mark General Danjuma’s 88th birthday, Tinubu described the retired general as “a distinguished statesman, soldier, and gentleman who, in peacetime and war, served our country with undivided loyalty.”

The President noted that the milestone offers an opportunity to reflect on “a remarkable life of service and on the many seasons he has walked through with courage and conviction.”

Tinubu said General Danjuma’s personal story is intertwined with Nigeria’s national story, recalling his service during a period when the young nation was confronted with severe trials.

He explained that Danjuma “stood firm when unity was fragile, and the path ahead was uncertain,” adding that his sense of duty “helped steady the country” and left a record of service that remains “a reference point for discipline and honour.”

According to the President, Danjuma has continued to influence national discourse long after his years in uniform through his counsel and example.

“Any time he speaks on national issues, he does so with unmistakable clarity and an unwavering belief in Nigeria,” Tinubu stated, noting that many leaders, including himself, have drawn strength from the retired general’s willingness to offer guidance when needed.

Tinubu also acknowledged General Danjuma’s humanitarian work through the T.Y. Danjuma Foundation, which he said has “opened doors for countless families in need of support and dignity,” and has grown into “one of the most respected philanthropic institutions on the continent.”

At 88, the President described Danjuma as “an elder whose life has helped shape the direction of our nation,” adding that he has “lived with purpose and served with courage – essential qualities that define the finest citizens of our republic.”

He thanked God for sustaining the elder statesman and prayed that the years ahead bring him continued health, strength, peace, and fulfilment.

“May the years ahead bring greater fulfilment and the quiet satisfaction of knowing that his life has touched many across Nigeria,” the president said.
