A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has expressed strong confidence that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will secure the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a social media post on Thursday, Showunmi stated unequivocally that Atiku is well-positioned to emerge as the party’s flag bearer. He declared that there was no doubt in his mind that the former vice president would clinch the ADC ticket, citing his political strength and readiness for the race.

He, however, noted that Atiku could face competition from former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, whom he described as the closest rival in the anticipated contest.

Showunmi also offered a broader assessment of Nigeria’s political climate, pointing to growing dissatisfaction among voters, particularly in the northern regions. According to him, both rural and urban communities in the North are deeply aggrieved, a sentiment he believes could play a decisive role in shaping the outcome of the 2027 elections.

He cautioned political actors against abandoning loyal allies after benefiting from their support, suggesting that such actions could backfire as shifting loyalties begin to redefine alliances ahead of the polls.

Speaking further on Atiku’s preparedness, Showunmi portrayed the former vice president as fully committed to the race, stressing that he is ready to vigorously pursue the contest and give it significant attention.

Highlighting key battlegrounds, Showunmi identified the South-East as a crucial region that could determine the election’s outcome. In contrast, he expressed uncertainty about the South-West, describing its voting patterns as unpredictable.

He also underscored the importance of the North-Central region, urging politicians to take its concerns seriously, as it could serve as a critical swing bloc in the election.

On governance, Showunmi reiterated his call for structural reforms in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for urgent changes to address the country’s challenges.

He concluded with a Yoruba proverb, explaining that it reflects the importance of continuing to speak out, even when it seems that those in authority are not listening.
