Atletico Madrid have officially entered the race to sign Atalanta’s highly rated defender Honest Ahanor, pitting the Spanish giants directly against a host of Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, for the 18-year-old’s signature.
The Nigerian-born center-back has rapidly ascended the ranks of Europe’s most promising defensive talents since his move to Bergamo last summer. According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Atletico have now “stepped up their monitoring” of the teenager, viewing him as a cornerstone for Diego Simeone’s future defensive line.
Ahanor’s breakthrough season has been nothing short of remarkable. The youngster has logged nearly 1,500 minutes across 24 appearances in the 2025/26 campaign, featuring prominently in both Serie A and the UEFA Champions League. His performances have triggered a scouting frenzy, with an extensive list of English clubs tracking his progress.
Fichajes reports that “Manchester United, Tottenham, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest have all dispatched scouts to compile detailed reports,” underscoring the intense competition brewing for the summer transfer window.
The interest from Old Trafford is particularly notable given the contractual uncertainty surrounding veteran defender Harry Maguire, who has entered the final six months of his deal. Similarly, Newcastle are planning for life beyond Fabian Schär, while Tottenham are preparing contingency plans amid ongoing speculation regarding the futures of their first-choice center-back pairing, Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.
Atletico, however, are ready to flex their muscle in the race. With the future of stalwart José María Giménez at the Metropolitano shrouded in doubt, reinforcing the back line has become a top priority for the Rojiblancos.
The club’s technical department is convinced that Ahanor possesses the ideal profile to thrive under Simeone. Fichajes notes that “Diego Simeone is said to value the Nigerian’s anticipation and strength in individual duels,” qualities the teenager has consistently displayed in Italy.
Securing his services, however, will require a significant financial outlay. Ahanor’s contract with La Dea is believed to contain a release clause valued between €50 million and €65 million, a figure that will shape the upcoming negotiations.
Adding another layer of intrigue to his rising stock is a pivotal decision regarding his international future. Born in Italy to Nigerian parents, Ahanor was previously ineligible for the Azzurri due to registration issues.
Having turned 18 on Monday, those bureaucratic obstacles have now been cleared. Despite reported efforts from Nigeria to secure his commitment, the defender is now expected to formalize a switch to represent Italy at the senior level.
Italy head coach Gennaro Gattuso had previously cited the passport issue as the sole barrier to Ahanor’s selection. With that hurdle removed, a senior call-up appears imminent, fulfilling the player’s ambition to represent his country of birth.
As the summer window approaches, Atletico Madrid’s entry into the fray adds a new dimension to what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive transfer battles for a young defender in Europe.
