Nigerian singer and songwriter, Adekunle Gold, has revealed how an exciting opportunity to write for American superstar Beyoncé eventually became an emotional experience following the death of his father.
Gold made the revelation during an interview with One54 Africa, in which he recalled writing the song in 2019, when he was thrilled at the prospect of contributing to a project with the global music star.
“I was so excited about writing for Beyoncé because that’s my GOAT,” Gold said.
However, the excitement surrounding the song faded after his father’s death. Gold said the loss affected him deeply and caused him to lose interest in the song, which had become intertwined with a painful period in his life.
Although the song was written in 2019, it remained unreleased for six years before eventually making its way to listeners in 2025.
The song is now featured on Gold’s personal album, marking a significant journey from an ambitious songwriting opportunity to a deeply personal piece of music.
For Gold, the delay was not simply about music or timing. The song had become connected to grief and a difficult chapter of his life, making it something he was not immediately ready to share with the world.
His revelation offers a glimpse into the often-unseen emotional journey behind the creation of music, particularly when personal experiences become intertwined with an artiste’s work.
What began with the excitement of writing for an artiste Gold considers his “GOAT,” ultimately became a song shaped by loss, giving it a meaning far beyond its original purpose.
The six-year journey from writing the song in 2019 to releasing it in 2025 also underscores how some songs can take on new lives as artistes grow, heal and become ready to tell the stories behind them.
