Reflecting on his career path, Jeremiah said: “I do product (UI/UX) design, and it is really about creating solutions for people like you and me. We live in a digital world, and most of what we used to do before is now on our phones. So, my work focuses on designing those applications and ensuring that you and I have pleasant experiences while making use of them.”

When asked about the inspiration behind his career choice, Jeremiah recalled that, “Early into the time I was pursuing a computer science degree at the university, I discovered a passion for designs. Product (UI/UX) design was an easy choice to focus on, seeing that it had a blend of design/colours and also the idea behind computer science. In short, I wanted to make sure my degree had a relation to my passion, and product (UI/UX) design ensured it was.”

Jeremiah’s success story is also marked by the significant impact his designs have had. He noted that, “Having to see my designs being used by thousands of people within and outside Nigeria is a huge success. I count it as a huge success knowing I have and still create impactful and needed solutions.”

Additionally, Jeremiah finds immense fulfilment in mentoring and teaching budding designers. He explained that, “another, which I believe is actually my biggest success story, is hearing positive feedback from budding and early-stage designers I have mentored. I was privileged to teach product (UI/UX) design at a company called Terra Learning (now Sidehustle Internship). The number of attendees and feedback on my class and my pre-recorded videos have brought this high sense of fulfilment that my career has also helped people find meaning in their lives.”

Product (UI/UX) design holds immense potential for societal transformation in Nigeria and Africa at large. The impact of well-designed digital solutions is already evident in several sectors as Nigerians and Africans are increasingly seeking efficiency and convenience in their daily lives.

For instance, in banking operations, what once required physical visits to traditional banks for transactions like withdrawals, deposits, or transfers can now be effortlessly handled on mobile phones. The role of UI/UX design in this scenario is crucial, ensuring that users can interact with these applications easily and intuitively.

Lucrativity

Jeremiah highlights the lucrative nature of a career in product (UI/UX) design, noting its high demand in the current job market.

Challenges

Jeremiah acknowledges the challenges faced in Nigeria, such as the difficulty in accessing data due to the limited availability of data banks and publications.

Additionally, there is a relatively low appreciation for design, as this field is still in its early stages of adoption in Nigerian society. Nonetheless, there is evident growth and potential for further development.
