Minister of Works David Umahi has said that security challenges in parts of the country have not hindered federal road construction projects, attributing smooth progress to directives from President Bola Tinubu for adequate protection of contractors.

Umahi spoke on Saturday while inspecting the Enugu–Onitsha highway and the Eke Obinagu mega flyover, among other projects. He said federal security agencies, under the guidance of the President, have ensured uninterrupted work at project sites.

“The President directed the National Security Adviser, service chiefs, and related authorities to provide adequate security on project sites. Work is going on at various sites according to the President’s directives,” he said.

The minister highlighted night-time concrete work in northern states as a demonstration of operational security. Extreme daytime heat above 45°C prevents daytime concrete application, he said.

“Applying concrete at night shows there is adequate security on our sites and anyone who tries anything funny will have himself to blame,” Umahi added.

He expressed satisfaction with the pace of work, urging South-East residents to recognize the President’s infrastructural drive:

“The Eke Obinagu flyover has attained 99 per cent completion, while sections of the Enugu–Onitsha road are nearing completion. They will all be inaugurated by the President in May.”

Chioma Nweze, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-East), commended the projects, noting their social and economic benefits:

“From the Enugu–Onitsha highway to the Enugu–Umuahia–Aba–Port Harcourt and Onitsha–Owerri roads, the President has opened avenues for social and economic growth. Farm produce can now be conveyed to markets, and students can exchange ideas across states.”
