Bauchi State Board of Internal Revenue (BIRS) has pledged to intensify efforts to curb revenue leakages and enhance transparency in tax administration.

The chairman of the board, Alhaji Usman Mu’azu, made the commitment when he appeared before the state House of Assembly Committee on Finance to defend the board’s proposed budget for the 2026 fiscal year.

He said the state relies  on strong internal revenue performance to finance key development projects, noting that the 2026 proposal is designed to strengthen revenue generation, block leakages and enhance the state’s financial capacity through improved tax administration and digital reforms.

Muazu said the board had achieved 80 per cent performance on its 2025 revenue target between January and October. He, however, stressed the need for additional funding to consolidate ongoing reforms.

According to him, the 2026 budget focuses on upgrading revenue collection systems, enhancing staff capacity, improving taxpayer services, and expanding the revenue base through innovative strategies in the state.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the House Committee on Finance, Hon. Ibrahim Tanko Burra, commended the Board for its contributions to boosting the state’s internal revenue profile. He assured the Committee that it will support the Board in securing the resources needed to implement its mandate successfully.

The budget defence session featured an interactive review of line items, revenue projections, and expected outcomes for the 2026 fiscal year.
