Borno State governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved the constitution of a committee to review the ban on the activities of metal scavengers in the state.
Governor Zulum had imposed a ban on the activities of the metal scavengers in July 2023, primarily to protect them from being killed by Boko Haram insurgents.
The statement released on Saturday by the governor’s SSA on New Media, Abdurrahman Ahmed Bundi, noted that the committee comprises the following: Alhaji Nasiru Ali Surundi – Chairman; Rep Nigerian Army – Member ; Rep Nigerian Police – Member ; Rep NSCDC – Member ; Rep DSS – Member, Rep Ministry of Justice – Member; Rep Ministry of Trade Investment and Tourism – Member; Rep Ministry of Information and Internal Security – Member; Rep Ministry of Sports Youth Empowerment and Poverty Alleviation – Member.
Others according to Bundu are ; Rep Ministry for Local Government and Emirates Affairs – Member ; Rep Association of Metal Scavengers, Borno State Chapter – Member; Engr Habib Modu Abadam; CSP Hussaini Bulama (Rtd) – Member and Rep Office of the SSG – Member/Secretary .
The statement noted that despite other negative things associated with the scavenging activities in Borno State, Zulum, however, for the numerous livelihood it provided for the youth, approved this committee to devise a framework that would sanitise the scavenging business.
