Securing their first win in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after five matches felt like a monumental achievement for Barau FC of Kano.
The Kano-based side claimed a convincing 3-1 victory in Aba over fellow top-flight debutants, Khun Khalifat, in a Matchday 6 fixture at the Enyimba International Stadium, the adopted home ground of the Owerri-based club.
However, their seasoned coach, Ladan Bosso, is not in a celebratory mood, as he is already focusing on consolidating the club’s newfound winning form.
During a post-match press conference, Bosso commended the players for their resilient performance away from home.
“Actually, I am very pleased with the result. Our players did well to secure this victory,” Bosso told the press.
He then shifted focus to the task of maintaining this winning mentality in upcoming fixtures, declaring, “It is crucial that the team builds on this performance, remains focused, and prepares vigorously for our next home fixture against Warri Wolves.”
The hosts took the lead just after 14 minutes, but Barau responded two minutes later through forward Yahya Ibrahim, who equalised with a fine finish from Sai’du Salisu’s brilliant assist.
Midfielder Hilary Ekawu then put the Maliya Boys (as Barau FC is affectionately known by their fans) ahead in the 64th minute, converting from Bismark’s precise cross, before Yahya Ibrahim doubled the lead with his second goal of the match, following an excellent pass from Sugau Aliyu.
Yahya Ibrahim’s brace took his tally to three goals in the NPFL for the 2025/2026 season.
Despite the win and three points, Barau FC remains mired in the relegation zone, sitting 18th on the table with five points from five games.
They will next host Warri Wolves on Sunday, 5 October 2025, at the Sani Abacha Stadium on NPFL Matchday seven.
