Brazil secured top spot in Group C while South Africa, Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina all celebrated historic World Cup breakthroughs on a dramatic day of action early Thursday’s morning.
The five-time world champions eased into the last 32 with a convincing 3-0 victory over Scotland in Miami. Vinicius Junior starred with a first-half brace, capitalising on a costly defensive error before adding a second in stoppage time. Matheus Cunha completed the scoring after the interval as Carlo Ancelotti’s side finished ahead of Morocco on goal difference.
The match also marked the tournament debut of Neymar, who came off the bench for his first appearance of the finals.
Scotland’s defeat left their qualification hopes hanging by a thread, with defensive lapses proving costly against a ruthless Brazilian attack.
Elsewhere, South Africa produced a memorable 1-0 victory over South Korea in Monterrey. Thapelo Maseko’s second-half strike earned Bafana Bafana their first-ever place in the World Cup knockout rounds after previous group-stage exits in all three of their earlier appearances.
The South Africans will now face co-hosts Canada, who also reached the knockout phase for the first time despite suffering a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland in Vancouver. Canada finished second in Group B on goal difference.
Bosnia-Herzegovina joined the celebrations after beating Qatar 3-1 to finish third in Group B. Their four-point tally was later confirmed as sufficient to qualify as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams, ensuring a maiden appearance in the knockout rounds.
In Group A, Mexico maintained their perfect record with a commanding 3-0 victory over the Czech Republic at the Estadio Azteca. Goals from Mateo Chavez, Julian Quinones and Alvaro Fidalgo completed a flawless group campaign for the hosts, while veteran goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa made history by appearing in a sixth World Cup finals at the age of 40.
As the group stage nears its conclusion, Brazil remain among the favourites, while South Africa, Canada and Bosnia celebrate landmark achievements that have already made this World Cup one to remember.
